Research Topic

Visual Development
"Where have we got to in understanding development of the visual brain in infants and children?" A festschrift to mark the retirement of Professor Alistair Fielder took place during the Child Vision Research Society meeting in June this year. As one of the invited speakers, Professor Janette Atkinson took the opportunity to take us back 30 years to when research into infant vision really took off. Visit our website to listen to Professor Atkinson's 60 minute exploration of infant vision testing techniques and her group's novel research outcomes.

Usability Products
CRS is launching a range of simulation tools that allow a human observer with normal vision to perceive the world through the eyes of a colour deficient observer with dichromacy, or as an elderly observer where their lens has naturally aged with time. These tools are intended for use in Colour Universal Design projects, and in usability studies that involve an assessment of visual performance in specific populations.

Variantor Glasses
CRS bring you an effortless way to explore colour combinations that are problematic for people with colour vision deficiencies. By wearing the Variantor glasses you can instantly see the world through the eyes of a dichromat. They are perfect for investigating aspects of Colour Universal Design in printed documents, product development and education.

Variantor Glasses contain a unique spectral filter which was developed jointly by Professor Shigeki Nakauchi (Toyohashi University of Technology), Professor Keizo Shinomori (Kochi University of Technology) and the Itoh Optical Industrial Company of Japan. A technical discussion of the filter was presented at the 2006 ECVP conference in St. Petersburg, Russia and a PDF version of the poster is available on our website.

Elderly Vision Simulation Glasses
As we age, the crystalline lens in our eyes becomes yellow and absorbs blue light, changing the way we perceive colour. More than just yellow tinted, these glasses use a completely new type of filtered lens that simulates the progressive changes to vision over time. This is based on The Two Factor Model, developed by Dr Katsunori Okajima of Yokohama National University.
