Introduction In
most real world situations a vision researcher is presented with some particular
apparatus left from a previous era or a finite sum of money with which
to purchase new equipment. In the latter case, he examines the available
suppliers and rapidly finds that it is easy to meet most of the requirements
within the specified budget but that straying outside the scope of commodity
products causes the cost to increase alarmingly. What can be done to squeeze
that extra bit of resolution from the system? In many cases it is possible
to trade an excess of one parameter for an improvement in another although
if the system only just cuts the mustard on all accounts then almost certainly
nothing further can be done.
