The SpectroCAL MKII device uses an FTDI chip to provide the USB virtual COM port interface with CRS custom USB VID and PID codes. The linux kernel has built-in support for FTDI devices, but the kernel driver will only load if it recognises a USB VID and PID from the FTDI allocation. To make the driver load, you need to make a udev rule so the CRS VID and PID codes are associated with the FTDI driver.

1. Add the following single line to:

   /etc/udev/rules.d/99-ftdi.rules

   ACTION=="add", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0861", ATTRS{idProduct}=="1003",
   RUN+="/sbin/modprobe ftdi_sio" RUN+="/bin/sh -c 'echo 0861 1003 >
   /sys/bus/usb-serial/drivers/ftdi_sio/new_id'"

2. To pickup the new rule, either reboot, or run:

   sudo udevadm control --reload

3. Unplug the device.

4. Plug in the device.

5. This should create the virtual serial port:

   /dev/ttyUSB0
